Re: #4- would the hit simply silent the drum, or alter it dependent on power, location, etc.? Maybe the hit would also alter the continuous sound. There’s not a ton of variation in silence.

good suggestion. maybe to really push the negative metaphor, the sound should vary according to how far your hand is from the drum. the farther i move it away, the louder it gets. and as with a conga, i can snap my hand away and then back to make a different quality sound, etc.
