Something is amiss with the Bill Evans link, which is about jazz, rather than economics doctoral programs. Or is this some obscure inside joke that I am missing?

Analogy. Watch it again and forget that it’s about music. The first part of the interview is exactly the kind of de-programming that wide-eyed entering PhD students (should) get in their first year courses. (Sometimes endearingly referred to as “brainwashing.”)
