There is typically a fine for parking your car on the street facing the wrong direction, i.e. against traffic. What is the harm in that?
Economic theory suggests that penalties should be attached to behaviors that are correlated with crime and not necessarily to criminal behavior itself. For example, price fixing may be impossible to detect, but conspiracy to fix prices may be much easier. It makes sense to make cheap talk a crime even though the talk itself causes no harm.
When you car is parked facing the wrong way its a sure sign that A) you previously committed the crime of driving the wrong way and B) you will soon do it again.

The rule originates from safe parking at night; the rear of a car is required to have red reflectors to alert drivers to the presence of a parked car. Facing the wrong way, without lights, poses a greater hazard.

The rule applies even during the day. Even when the time limit will expire (and so the car must be moved) before nightfall.

This is only a local phenomenon in the US. It does not apply in the UK or many other countries.

Anonymous, it is illegal to park against the traffic at night in the UK – see http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860 section 248.
It is not because it is a sign that you are driving the wrong way – parallel parking even with the flow of traffic requires reversing in the opposite direction to the traffic. It is because of the danger to other drivers at night, as Nigel says.

Backing up is not illegal. Crossing over the center line without turning is.

Isn’t this fully legal in Texas? Is it more dangerous than turning across a few lanes of traffic?

Also, on a permit-required street, having each car facing the same direction makes it easier for parking enforcement staff to scan all the permits on their walk past.
It also helps the municipality generate ticket revenue. (It’s sufficiently local here to often catch visitors.)

A part of the danger (on country roads especially and at night) is other drivers being confused into trying to pass you on the wrong side thinking that’s where the road is.

True, and that’s the reason the law is intact in the UK. At night the reflectors of the headlight units are more visible at distance than the road, leadingdrivers to suspect the road passese to the left of the oncoming vehicle. We assume the red reflection from rear lights will be on our own side and expect to pass them to the right. During the day this risk is mitigated as we can see he road easily so the law does not apply. It kicks in at official lighting up time.

Speaking as a Texan, it is illegal to facing the wrong way here, as several visitors to my house can attest. But, I really don’t see the harm in it.

forget all of this. i hate the whole ticket for backing into a space rule. why not? who does it harm? plus, when it comes time to leave, i’ll get out quicker, marginally decreasing the traffic jam of parking lot vultures waiting to swipe my space because they see i still have 15 minutes on the meter.

I don’t think it makes a lot of sense. Just today the city sent someone into our neighborhood and ticketed all of the drivers who were parked the “wrong way”. I think it is just another way for the city to get money from the people who live here.

If you don’t know the rules of the road…you shouldn’t operate a vehicle. Do you think speed limit laws make any sense either? When driving, it’s ALL about safety! Quite frankly most of the comments on here show a HUGE lack of of driving intellect.

Bothered, I couldn’t agree more. Driving is an extremely dangerous activity, especially without proper maintenance of the vehicle. People do NOT take it as seriously as they should. That means understanding the rules of the road as much as knowing how to operate and maintain your vehicle. Don’t be lazy, you really aren’t saving that much time, and the risks (ticket, wreck, etc) exceed the reward (saving a few seconds).

Mr Anonymous seems to think that people who part the wrong way are idiots. If I park the legal way I cannot get out of my vehicle and I may as well go back home. I am disabled and was supplied with a van that has an underfloor lifter which comes out the left side ( we drive on left side in Australia ). The state government approved the modifications to my van, and the local governments keep on giving me fines. I try to park legally, but local governments don’t provide sufficient disability parking, so then I park on the road illegally. I don’t think I am an idiot.

Bothered, the one who has no knowledge of driving in the US is you because if you did have some knowledge you would know that speed limit only applies to commercial vehicles and for people who have a drivers license also the government lies to us and says we need a DL when in reality we do not need one to travel freely in the United states of America. That would only apply if you are transporting goods or passengers as a form of business and that’s why it is called a commercial driver’s license for commercial drivers in which they don’t apply to me. I have won many cases and 2 lawsuits here in California.

Of course is a “US” thing, to be able to fine a driver for such a stupid fault, when we all know that in the United Sates, as long as it makes money to the system and seems do-able, the system WILL include it to make even more money….I bet the city does not have the rule that if a car hits a hole or crack (unmarked) on the road, the individual has the right to sue the system?….Why, because that would result on the system loosing and not gaining!

When you park facing the wrong way on a street with 2 way traffic you are going to be vulnerable to two dangerous situations when you leave. 1. if there are acrs parked in front of you (behind you if your car was parked in the correct direction) you will have a poor line of site as the steering weel is next to the curb. You will also have to cross two potential lanes of opposite moving traffic. Finally as you pull out if there is oncoming traffic your esacpe requires you to speed up toward the potential accident not away from it when you are parked in the proper direction.

I got a ticket for this and the situation described above is exactly what I experienced. When I pulled in I didn’t see what the big deal was, but when pulling out I understood why I got the ticket. Car with tinted windows I couldn’t see though in front of me and pulling out into oncoming traffic facing me as an added bonus. Having your reflective tail lights facing backwards was also a good point brought up by several people.

Who are you to call people retards?! you’re clearly to inconsiderate to even have so called friends Have you thought that maybe. just maybe the person never realized parking the wrong way on a street that is virtually deserted didnt seem malicious on their part? It is about money in this situation so dont even go there on that. All it knocked sense into is that there are some dumbass laws out there involving parking. im not arguing that driving the wrong way should be legal or parking the wrong way on a busy street is either, but on a very quiet street in a smal city or town shouldnt be because then its just to make money clearly. Now if you’re in NY, SF, Chicago, all different story again, its all busy, but not cities like Louisville, KY for example. Well, I accept those explanations for this by-law, as it states on the ticket of city of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. But then is it the law makers and / or executors’ responsibility to inform citizens there is such a minute by-law lurking somewhere? Has anyone received a thorough traffic rules when you get your driver’s lessons or license? Or at least refer to to a website, or even urge you to go to a local library to read all those rules time by time? Does a local library even hold this so-closely-relate-to-our-daily-life-and-safety law or by-law? If not, how would we access these law? I suggest a one-time warning.

On a small residential road there is generally no room for 2 cars to pass eachother without pulling over. therefor your not crossing traffic to park or putting anyone in danger. There’s parking on the right side driving in the center and parking on the left. It’s not being lazy it’s a convenience.

Section 248 of the UK Highway Code:
“You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space. Laws CUR reg 101 & RVLR reg 24”
…so parking on the ‘wrong side of the road’ facing traffic is OK as long as it is in a marked parking bay.

Your reasoning is insufferably big brother-esque. Parking facing the wrong isn’t proof of jack shit, except that you originally parked on the other side and had to move over due to a no parking sign. Dumb ordinance that should be universally defied.

here is my question I live in suburbs and know my neighbors etc… neighbors 16 yr old son gets his new truck parks on the street. Only been 2 weeks with him parking their always facing wrong way. If I start backing up leaving my driveway I will have to do a 3 point stop and turn to avoid hitting his truck he is directly in front of my driveway and I have to go over my own yard and curb to get out of my own driveway. I’m not a nasty neighbor so I don’t really say anything but today I’m reversing and I hit his truck backing up. Now I’m getting insurance info for parents and their saying not to make a claim because they don’t want their insurance to go up. I know it won’t because it’s a claim on my ins but my question is would they be held with any liability since he was parked facing wrong way and directly in front of my driveway? Would my ins deny a claim to them due to him parking etc….
I have a weird feeling they want cash, but are going to try to get me for a whole new bed of his truck (or more) by saying they will just get an estimate. Heck I’m not trying to bitch but if your 16 yr old just got his license then he should know (and so should parents) he can’t park his truck like that. Also the family I feel needed to maybe think about their neighbors ( that have a quad cab dodge truck) who own 2 trucks and a trailer with atvs and bikes across the street and the possibility of my husband or myself NOT being able to get out of my driveway due to his “new truck” and great parking job. If the 18 yr old senior girl who also drives a truck 2 doors down can park the correct way and be courteous to her neighborhood why can’t a 16 yr old boy do the same.
Also to point out they have a open spot in their driveway for his new truck to park too!
Thanks for the vent along with the question. Hope I can get some answers to their liability if any.
Thanks

I’ve been driving safely now for over 44 years in the USA and Europe. From a car, pickup truck, bus and tractor & trailer, I’ve survived the craziness of city congestion and into the lonely wilderness. My opinion is the act of driving has changed from being a “privilege” bestowed by a state government to that of an expected “entitlement” by those not having adequate public transportation available to them. So for me, Parking IS a fundamental performance task that must be accomplished within established parameters. For ease vehicle placement along the curb, a collective set of rules are established for general safety of all vehicle (bicyclists included) drivers and pedestrians. Usually the required State driver education program covers the particulars of why vehicles must be parked in a certain manner. Which is also a form of communication between drivers in or at any location. Although in some areas of States the local city police do not enforce parking violations because they lack sufficient manpower to issue tickets. If they do, it’s their job to enforce applicable traffic laws. So if you determine that for you it’s much easier to park against on-coming traffic and you do so, I wish for you this scenario: A face to face meeting to explain to the surviving members of a family why you seriously injured or killed their loved one in a head-on crash that you caused because you did not see them while you were pulling out from your parking space and crossing over the on-coming traffic lane. Know this, your days are numbered until it catches you unaware. Will the Traffic Court Judge be merciful in the punishment you receive because of your inexperience behind the wheel of a vehicle OR slam dunk you because your were taught what wrongful driving performance standards are and you did it anyways? Or will you plea bargain for the chance to retain your valued driving privilege? The clock is ticking….

In my case if I don’t park facing the wrong way, I cannot get out of my van. My state government has approved my van. Therefore I use my van as it was built and approved, and should not be fined for doing so. The government has decided to give their approval. All of the scenarios you mentioned involved careless driving, and I am very careful when I decide to park and get out of my vehicle.

I have been working on my car with it parked the wrong way, I drove it straight out of our drive and will be returning it the same way – so no going out onto the lanes. I have a red reflective triangle mounted on either side over the headlights and have the red taillights covered, but not the reversing lights. The reason it is parked the wrong way is due to the steep angle of the road when I want to jack up the front of the car (I park the correct way when jacking up the rear), By placing reflectors in the correct places, I have made my car legal. I have even asked several police and council officers and they said what I have done is fine and legal.
As for pulling out, our driveway is on a bend and as we live near a railway station, a school and a sporting complex, there are cars parked out over our driveway most days of the week. This makes it very difficult to reverse out of our driveway, about 1/4 of the time, we cannot reverse out of our drive. And even when we can, we usually do it blind because large 4WDs are the most often offenders.Think school traffic flows and no viability.
The ridiculous thing is there is nothing we can do about having cars parked across our driveway, the police and council do not react to our pleas, they won’t even come out to fine them. They just tell us to wait until they go. I am a disabled pensioner and have been in and out of hospital many times over the past five years. It is so bad here that several times ambulances have had to double park on the street to pick me up.
What is worse, parking the wrong way and putting up reflectors, or being so inconsiderate as to block people in their houses by parking across the driveway (sometimes for days).
Yet they will quickly book anyone parking the wrong way.
I actually rammed one car (left a big dent in their door with my towbar and towball) that blocked our driveway, just after the person got out of their car and started to walk away. You should have seen how upset they were. But I told them it was illegal to park there and they said “it is only for 5 minutes while I pick up my child”. Well I knew that was a lie because it was the 3rd day in row and she parked there for several hours each time that I actually saw. I had a medical test to attend and was not going to put up with her inconsiderate behavour any more. I told her that the only thing that was going to happen if she tried to make a insurance claim against me, is that she would have to pay for a new paint job on my tow bar. Never saw her or her car again.
So most of the anti parking the wrong way people are commenting without even trying to understand what is going on for some of us, particularly those of us who do the correct thing when we park the wrong way.
And this idea about pulling out across lanes of traffic after parking the wrong way is rubbish when you think about the difficulty we have most of the time when people block our driveway.
I agree that parking the wrong way without doing the reflector thing is wrong, but why is it that the powers that be are not as anal about other parking laws?

I can’t speak for other localities, but where I live it is patent that enforcement of the no-parking-the-wrong-direction law has nothing whatever to do with public safety. This rule is enforced strictly as a means of generating revenue from parking citations.
In previous times the law was rarely if ever enforced. In fact, many people didn’t even know the law existed. However, since the economic implosion of 2007 rendered my city government all but insolvent, the city council has focused on parking enforcement as a revenue stream. Both fines and enforcement have increased considerably. Initially the city even extended the hours of parking enforcement; they only rolled that idiot policy back once it became clear that city council members were in danger of being lynched by local small businesses, who were taking it in the shorts because of the crackdown on parking violations.
While there are in fact safety implications with wrong-way parking, and while some municipalities enforce the relevant laws to mitigate the danger, this is indisputably not the case in my neck of the woods.

I can understand it but sometimes there are circumstances. Such as I am handicap and can’t afford the sign. So I’d like to park where I step out onto my curb rather than in the street. If I need to put something on my car to keep on coming cars from hitting me then so be it but it’s a relatively quiet street except for the occasional speeder. I don’t always move fast – so I would like to be able to park as I wish from time to time that way – especially when the other handicap person is not parked in the driveway.

I was a civilian employee of a police department in Texas and this is what numerous officers told me: You are more likely to veer too far to the right and hit a parked vehicle than you are to cross a lane or lanes of traffic and hit a car on the other side of the road. If you are unfortunate enough to hit a parked car, you want to hit the trunk instead of the engine compartment because the trunk has a larger “crumple zone”.

We live on a two way residential street with only parallel parking on one side if street and there’s two ways of going down our street. People park facing north and south but parking enforcement gave my neighbor a ticket because he was parked facing south but they rarely come in our neighborhood otherwise they would make a lot of money since majority of the people park facing south, we have one way streets on either side of us.

Parking on the wrong side of a two-way street might only mean you live on that side of the street. It doesn’t mean you are driving on the wrong side, nor does it mean you intend to when you drive off again. Mostly, it just means you can get out on the curb rather than on the street-side (in the way of traffic). Just sayin’. Otherwise, don’t do it because it’s against the law but, I’m still not sure why, at least on residential streets. Again, just satin’. However, after reading some of the other comments, such as the safety issue at night (reflecting red tail lights) I can see the reasons better.

We had to drive the car to face the other way in order for the leads to reach the car to jump start it.

All you individuals quoting safety, you’re clearly not using your brain. Also, anecdotal evidence is not enough to make a law, nor overturn one. But let’s take safety without regard to whether it should or should not be a law already. All cars have drivers. This is a fact. Until very recently, cars could not park themselves. Therefore getting out of the car is SIGNIFICANTLY more dangerous to the driver when parking with the flow of traffic. On to the second point. In the scenario where you have obeyed the law and parked with traffic flow, and you started pulling out of the parking spot, you are on a diagonal. Therefore there is a high likelihood that NONE of your lights are facing the traffic coming from the flow direction you parked in (draw this out and use your brain). Therefore by parking CONTRARY to traffic there is a GUARANTEE that one of your headlights is pointing at oncoming traffic. Therefore at night it makes MORE sense to park contrary to traffic. I will freely admit the points about parking contrary is confusing at night with all lights off and not being able to see the road, but IF YOU ARE THAT CONFUSED AND CANNOT SEE THE ROAD YOU SHOULD HAVE SLOWED DOWN AND/OR STOPPED ALREADY. The ONLY merit I have heard so far that makes sense is that pulling out you do not have mirrors or a clear line of sight to see what cars are coming. This is a clear deficiency and a good reason for the law. That being said, I would guess that it is completely offset by the fact that the driver is in danger exiting the vehicle with current laws. Not to mention that the whole ‘not being able to see’ thing happens every day when reversing out of a perpendicular parking spot. And as a final note, until someone runs a test and proves that parking contrary to traffic is MORE dangerous, it SHOULD NOT BE A DAMN LAW. We live in the United States, the government is supposed to be the least restrictive it can possibly be, not the other way around…

No mater what your thoughts, is it right or wrong it is the Law and that should be is good enough to park on the correct side.

I have parked on the wrong side of the road, and have been fined, and I admit its against the law, and the law is for good reasons….
However I only park on the wrong side of the road when there is no suitable parking for me that allows me to park legally.
I am disabled and have a van with a lifter and for me to park on the road I have to park on the wrong side of the road. The lifter has been checked by the state government and passed and the local government hand me fines.
I choose not to turn around and go home and will continue to park on the wrong side of the road if the local government hasn’t provided disability parking near where I want to park.
Should I just go home ?

Let’s get a little real here people.
Yes, this really is codified law in Texas. This is a very obscure and largely unknown law in Texas (Texas Transportation Code § 545.303.(a) Additional Parking Regulations).
BUT. . .you r-e-a-l-l-y must be an A-hole of a cop to write a ticket in a quiet subdivision when this clearly does not present any form of endangerment to the public or private owner.
Then again, if you have a ticket quota to meet – what a great way to abuse your power and waste public resources. Nice touch!!

I live in Orange County, NY. Woke up to a ticket for parking “left side curb” (that’s what it says on the ticket). Ticket was placed there at 1:55am last week. When you turn on the street, I live in the last house on the right side of a dead end street. I’m floored as to why I got this ticket at 1:55am when it was dark as hell outside. I did turned my car around facing what would technically be the opposite direction (as if I’m heading back out and leaving the street) but it’s a dead end street and I live in the last house. I still don’t understand why the ticket say “left side curb” when I was on the right side of a dead end street in front of my house. Please provide some insight if you can.

Follow up to this ticket. So I went to court yesterday and the judge told me I got the ticket because the car was turned around (parked the wrong way). Anyway, the judge threw out the ticket and told me not to park the wrong way again even if I live in the last house on a dead end street with not thru traffic and I agreed.

My 21 year old Granddaughter recently came back to stay with me..only a few friends visit ..but 2 of them park their cars going the wrong way..in front of my home. I just cussed for a solid 15 minutes..about it. To Me it screams DRUG HOUSE ..FLOP HOUSE…WHORE HOUSE …OUT OF CONTROL HOUSE…NO RESPECT FOR THE HOMEOWNER…HOUSE..NO RULES HOUSE….& I got all that from My Mother growing up. She would never let anyone walk over her that way. In her memory..I can not let anyone make my property look like a ghetto hood. My Hubby and I work hard to maintain our yard & home. It is just disrespectful & speaks to the persons character of being selfish & entitled & lawless..thank you for letting me vent!!

That’s making an awful lot of assumptions based on precious little data. If the situation warrants I’ll park facing the wrong way, and for you to assume this indicates criminal behavior or intent on my part is well beyond ridiculous. You’d do well to bear Occam’s Razor in mind when imputing motives to behaviors, rather than allowing your worst impulses to cloud your thinking.

OMG you get upset easily, how will you cope if a real crisis comes along. Did you consider talking to them and asking them to park legally rather than the action you took.

I live on a caldesac and normally park straight in front of my house instead of parallel and received a ticket even though it inhibits no one at all. I’m really frustrated and didn’t know it was illegal.

Thank you for the public service post. We should slow down and be attentive drivers!
When residents park on the wrong side of the street they increase risk of danger.
1. Wrong side parking puts the driver near the curb instead of near street so your line of vision is reduced especially if you’re parked behind a car. Kids because they are shorter are especially obscured in this situation.
2. Because we live in US and not England we are also conditioned as pedestrians, bikers and drivers to expect on coming cars to be on left, except the wrong side parked cars will be pulling into traffic from the unexpected side!

If you park on the wrong side of the street a driver will think he’s going the wrong way on a one way street.

I parked facing the wrong way because my hybrid electric/gas vehicle has the electric charger on the drivers side. In order for me to plug in the car and not have the bulky charger cord sticking out into traffic. Further, the street I parked on is “extremely residential” in the sense that there are many stop signs around so it is not a thru street. Also, my car was facing an alley so no cars could park in “front” of me when parked illegally or “behind” me if I was parked legally. the speed limit on the street is probably 25mph but most people drive slower than that because it is a residential area and is not a thru street because of the numerous stop signs. I live in a city in Montana which is “extremely” rural so take “city” with a grain of salt. Bozeman has 30,000 people. We are a state of 147,000 square miles and about a million people compared to the UK 96,000 square miles and has 66 million souls.
If this was a busy street with no stop signs or a 35mph speed limit, I can see how the issue of safety can arise. Further, someone did make the good point of having reflectors on the backs of cars. Again, I live in a “grid” pattern of residential streets and I still maintain that this is not a safety threat.
At a certain point the law must be used because of a real and tangible threat to public safety or well being and I do not feel my “violation” meaningfully created a threat to anyone else in this particular situation.

It goes to show respect, integrity, and that parking facing the wrong way is just too lazy. Not hard to find a spot, turn around and do the right thing. The public road is what it is, so a communal space needs rules and we all share it so rules are in place for a reason. Don’t be an idiot and just do the right thing and follow the law. Otherwise, park it on your own front lawn and face it the wrong way, nothing can be done about it then. Lazy!

I live in a very small cul de sac with a small turning circle at the top, however the houses at the top park there cars (which they have apparently done for years) which makes it impossible to use the turning circle, so I have no choice but to reverse onto a main road, so as I see it I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, there is not enough room in the street to do a 3 point turn either…..
