I’m going to a conference in New Zealand in January and just bought tickets. Just before you fly you can participate in an auction to move up one class in seats:
Using OneUp is really simple. If it’s at least seven days before your flight, go online to the OneUp page and follow the step-by-step process:
- Decide what you’re willing to offer
- Submit your offer
- Provide your payment details – you can pay by credit card, debit card or by using your Airpoints Dollars™*
- Check your offer and then submit.
When I fly, I expect the flight to be near empty so I just want to hit the reserve price. Wonder what it is?

flight will not be near empty — that’s a really nice time to visit NZ

I recently fly Etihad for the first time and they had something similar. Though there was a pretty high floor on what you could offer.

Unless you’re flying on the 24th of December (and thus missing Christmas Day) it’ll be a full flight. Used to be that 23rd and 26th of December flights were pretty empty, but anecdotally even those are filling up.
Have fun!

When you get around to it, the app actually gives guidance on the “quality” of your offer (which, of course, you might wish to take with a grain of salt). But I concur with Anonymous — unless you are actually in the air on Christmas day your chances of anything like a “near empty” flight are very slim.
