In search of a rural retreat, ideal for apple picking? A decent close option to Chicago is Heinz Orchard. No mazes, hay rides etc…just apples. The only problem: what do you do with the 40 pounds of apples you end up picking…?!!

My parents, New Englanders with ample opportunities to visit orchards, often make delicious apple bread.

Cut up and season the appes like for pie and then freeze the filling in pie tins and mini pie tins. Pop them out and put in ziplocs. Then anytime in the next year you want apple pie just take pie crust roll it out and put the applepiesicle in and cover with more pie crust and bake. Easy yummy and massively impressive come feburary/march. Easy as 3.141592
