A standard introductory graduate textbook on game theory, A Course in Game Theory by Martin Osborne and Ariel Rubinstein is now freely available in PDF format. You can download it here. This is a great step toward the day when there will be top quality freely available textbooks in all subjects and the day when students and faculty will not be held-up. While we are on the subject, here is a list of other free economics books (right-hand column.)

Thanks, I have these hard copies also. But this is great.
However, I disagree with your conclusion – if textbooks were sold like software, they could be either rented for a short period of time, for those students who only want the book for the course. Alternatively, for more serious students they could subscribe to the book and its updates.
This would effectively kill of the text book reseller market and text books would not have to compete with themselves. Bringing lower prices, but more value to those who want to subscribe instead of merely renting.
