Why go abroad and go to Starbucks? Well, this view from the branch on the river in Lucerne is pretty spectacular. ( This is the Chapel Bridge which runs diagonally across the river. ) But beware: the coffee at Starbucks still sucks and it’s even more expensive in Switzerland than the U.S. While there are no coffeeshops, some of the bars on the river open early, serve coffee and have the same view.

I seem to remember some of the better hotels on the river having great views and selling better coffee. I’m an reliable source as I concentrated on fermented beverages.

Breakfast is a little early for me for a fermented drink. But, yes, I realized later that the bars actually open for breakfast.

I’d say the view from the one in Bebek, a suburb of Istanbul, is better.

Thanks, James. I’ve never been to Istanbul. Ariel Rubinstein has a coffee shop guide (http://arielrubinstein.tau.ac.il/univ-coffee.html) that is non-Starbucks that might be a good source. But I notice he has nothing on Lucerne or Istanbul.

I would agree with you that the Starbucks still sucks and $6 for a grande latte was pretty expensive, but I wasn’t impressed with the coffee from the bars either. The view was nice and the current was rediculous in that river.
