My academic home page (http://faculty.wcas.northwestern.edu/~jel292/) is looking outdated. I need something new and a little more professional. Do you know anybody who designs websites for academics? Could you recommend anyone? An example of their work would be helpful.
Meanwhile here’s The Bad Plus playing with Bill Frisell at Newport. Amazing stuff.

Take a page out of Xavier Sala-i- Martin’s book! That guy knows how to build an academic web page.

I don’t professionally design academic websites,
but I did spend some time learning CSS and HTML to design my own:
brunosalcedo.com
I also designed the website for a local student conference:
personal.psu.edu/bxs5142/PERC/PERC.shtml
The designs are very simple so that you could easily edit the contents in the future.
If you think that they are up to standard I would be happy to help.

I tried to keep the design as simple as possible but I could definetily do more compliated things. I’m particularly proud that the sites are responsive to the characteristics of the browser/devise: they are phone-friendly.

bruno thanks, i do like your site, you did a great job. but i think i am looking for something a little more sophisticated. chris blattman’s web site would be a model. chrisblattman.com

I like your website — no bells or whistles — because your work is easy to access and is presented in a well-organized manner — but if you are going to “sex” it up, so to speak, I would recommend looking at Ariel Rubinstein’s website — very cool

Has that Bad Plus + Bill Frissell set been released commercially yet? And, if not, why not?

No economists have decent web sites, so you’re good. But if you go the Ariel route, you need first to identify which outrageous journal rejection letter will be your frontispiece.

Hi, Would you kind enough to give a break to a new talent? I’ve been designing for web for 8 years now as a hobby but it just recently that I decided to do it professionally. I am currently working on a multi purpose website prototype built in HTML5 and Twitter Bootstrap and I can convert it to anything you like to use. I am doing Responsive Design too and just recently finished a Free WordPress Theme as a personal project. Please take a look at my site annalyn.info.
Thanks and I hope to hear from you 🙂

Hello Jeff, thank your for your reply. I checked Chris Blattman’s site and I believe that I can customize a WordPress theme with the same quality and most of all a site that you will surely like and use as an academician. I have prepared a questionnaire for my clients to understand the project more and what the clients wants and needs for their website. I’m optimistic I can do that. 🙂

Jeff, I made my own site using a WYSYWIG editor (Dreamweaver), which wasn’t that hard. I know that learning to do this is something you probably don’t have time for, but the problem I see with having someone build a site for you is that you either (i) will be dependent on them to update it, (ii) will have to learn HTML/CSS anyway so you can update it yourself, or (iii) will end up breaking the design by trying to update it without learning how.
If you really don’t want to go that route then I would recommend a solution along the lines suggested by Joshua Gans: go with WordPress or another platform that handles most of design work and enforces design consistency.

It looks good to me, the simpler the better. Less is more as they say.
